Why do diabetes and BP need regular follow-up?

Diabetes and high blood pressure usually cause no pain in the early years, but over time they can affect the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves and feet. Keeping sugar and BP in the target range lowers these risks.

Regular visits let the doctor see trends in your readings, adjust medicines in time, and check for early signs of complications. A short visit every few weeks or months is far easier than treating a complication later.

Which tests are done for sugar and BP patients?

GRBS is a quick finger-prick sugar test done during your visit. Blood sugar fasting and post-meal, HbA1c, lipid profile, kidney function and urine tests are done at the in-house Jan Seva Lab, which opens at 7:30 AM so you can give a fasting sample early.

An ECG is advised from time to time, especially for long-standing diabetes or BP. Your doctor will tell you which tests you need and how often, based on your condition.

What can I do at home to control sugar and BP?

Take your medicines at the same time every day and do not stop them without asking your doctor. Reduce salt, sugar, sweets and fried food, eat more vegetables, and keep rice and chapati portions moderate.

Walk or exercise for about 30 minutes on most days, keep a healthy weight, avoid smoking and limit alcohol. Note your home sugar or BP readings in a small book and bring it to each visit.

Most patients need a sugar check every visit and an HbA1c test every 3 months. Your doctor will advise a schedule based on your condition.

What is a normal HbA1c for a diabetic?

For many adults with diabetes the target HbA1c is around 7 percent, but the right target depends on your age and health. Your doctor will set a target that is safe for you.
