An ECG records the electrical activity of your heart. It takes about 5 minutes, needs no preparation and is painless. Dr. Vijaykumar has completed an Advanced Course in ECG Interpretation and reviews your ECG immediately.
What does an ECG show?
An ECG records the electrical signals that make your heart beat. It can show an irregular rhythm, a very fast or slow heart rate, signs of reduced blood supply to the heart, strain from long-standing high blood pressure and signs of a previous heart attack.
A normal ECG is reassuring, but it does not rule out every heart problem. Depending on your symptoms, the doctor may also advise a 2D-ECHO, blood tests or a cardiologist consultation.
When should I get an ECG done?
Doctors usually advise an ECG for chest discomfort, palpitations, breathlessness or giddiness, and as a routine check for people with diabetes, high BP or high cholesterol.
An ECG is also commonly needed for pre-operative fitness before surgery and as part of annual health check-ups, especially after the age of 40 or if heart disease runs in the family.
